Marnie Downey, R.Kin., M.Sc.(Occupational Biomechanics), CCPE

President / Ergonomist

Marnie DowneyMarnie Downey, owner of ERGO Inc., has earned a solid reputation as an expert in the field of Occupational Ergonomics. She is a Certified Canadian Professional Ergonomist and Professional Kinesiologist with over 25 years of ergonomics consulting and training expertise.

Marnie has solved diverse ergonomic challenges for hundreds of companies in a variety of industries in Canada, the United States and Mexico with her pro-active approach to problem solving. Some of her projects have included the design-build of correctional institution touch screen technology control rooms, time studies to determine the repetitiveness of a work cell, analysis of material handling tasks to reduce double handling and create lean work processes, design of a kitchen to accommodate wheelchair patrons, development of post offer pre-screening programs for hospitals, school boards and manufacturing and the ergonomic design of office spaces, libraries, retail stores and industrial workstations.

Marnie authored the Ergonomics Study Guide for the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals. The text of this domain provides an overview of the most relevant ergonomic principles for Safety Professionals and is used when preparing for the BCRSP exam.

Her energetic personality provides a motivational training atmosphere for management and employees. She has presented at the American Industrial Hygiene Association in Washington, D.C., the Canadian Association of Ergonomists, the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Ontario Kinesiology Association Annual Conference, the Industrial Accident Prevention Association National Health & Safety Conference, The Schedule 2 Employers Group Conference, the Ontario Library Association, several Chamber of Commerce events and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.

Rachel Mitchell, R.Kin., M.Sc. (Human Factors Engineering), CCPE

Managing Ergonomist & Return to Work Consultant

Rachel Mitchell is a Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist and a Registered Kinesiologist with over 17 years of experience in both Canada and the United States. She holds a Masters of Science in Human Factors Engineering from Nottingham University.

Rachel is currently the President of the Canadian College for the Certification of Professional Ergonomists and is actively involved regulating and promoting ergonomics.

Rachel has spent the majority of her career providing ergonomic consulting services to clients in a range of environments including manufacturing, warehousing, health care, construction, transportation, public utility, office, childcare, retail, educational, pulp and paper, aerospace and food preparation.  She has worked providing  Return to Work Coordination for clients attending the WSIB Specialty Programs. Rachel has successfully assisted clients with extended work absences, those suffering from Chronic Pain, and those with work-related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder return to meaningful work.

Rachel’s experience includes completing detailed ergonomic analyses, Physical Demands Analysis (PDAs), Cognitive Demands Analysis (CDAs), office assessments, ergonomics program development & evaluation, return to work assessments, ergonomics integration into engineering designs, , as well as a wide range of training programs including 1-hour lunch and learns to 3-day workshops.

Rachel builds relationships with employers, workers, and unions to ensure successful outcomes; whether it be risk reduction, workstation and work flow design, ergonomic program development, or return to work planning.

Farzana Ismail, B.Sc., CCPE (Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist)

Ergonomist

Farzana IsmailFarzana Ismail is a Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist with over 20 years applied ergonomics experience in Musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) Risk Assessments / Ergonomic Assessments, Physical and Cognitive Demands Analyses (PDAs / JDAs) and Ergonomics Training. Farzana has carried out a variety of projects in both office and industrial settings; including unionized environments, in order to prevent musculoskeletal injury and improve workplace productivity and performance.

During her employment with Enbridge Gas Inc., Farzana was primarily responsible for implementing and managing all aspects of Enbridge’s Ergonomics Program including the Office Ergonomics Representative process and awareness campaigns. She also worked with many departments to introduce ergonomic engineering design changes to construction maintenance trucks, station lids, pin-off tool box and dump truck steps, as well as to address ergonomic risk factors in the design of a new meter shop and mobile work areas. She also advised on the purchase of new equipment, such as fully-adjustable seating in vehicles, night maintenance vehicles with standing clearance, adjustable control room monitor arms and office seating and furniture specifications.

Kristan Rossetto is an Associate Ergonomist (AE) and a Registered Kinesiologist with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics from the University of Guelph and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management from Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.  Kristan has workplace ergonomic and clinical exercise experience in various settings, including manufacturing, automotive, food preparation, warehouse, retail, correctional facilities, and healthcare.

As an Ergonomic Consultant, Kristan has developed and delivered customized ergonomic training workshops, including ergonomic best practices and safe handling for a Distillery, e-learning and safe patient handling for a hospital, a stretching program for a warehouse, and injury prevention strategies and proper computer workstation set-up for office workers.  Kristan has presented at the Ontario Municipal Human Resources Association (OMHRA) conference and the Schedule 2 Employers Group conference on how employers can use PDAs and CDAs to meet their legal requirements in the return to work process.

For computer users, Kristan conducts office ergonomic assessments to ensure employees’ computer workstations comply with CSA Office Ergonomic Standards and are set up to fit their needs and reduce their risk of discomfort.

Kristan helped to design and administers post-offer pre-employment testing for various industries, including healthcare and manufacturing.

Kristan is experienced at conducting physical and cognitive job demands analysis, ergonomic risk assessments, and job suitability assessments to provide employers with comprehensive information about the functional and physical requirements of a job to prevent workplace injuries and for the effective return to work of employees. She has assisted with control room design for  correctional facilities and patient intake for hospitals.

Desiree Knack, R.Kin., DipRec., HBA Kin.

Registered Kinesiologist

Desiree has over 15 years of combined clinical and exercise rehabilitation experience working with all types of clients, injuries, and medical conditions. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and Psychology from the University of Western Ontario and a Post-Graduate Honours Recreation and Leisure Services Diploma from Humber College.

Desiree has worked with a diverse collection of highly accredited health care and wellness professionals in multi-disciplinary settings including, clinics, corporate wellness sites, manufacturing environments, non-profit organizations, and municipal recreation, as well as community and fitness facilities. Desiree’s exposure to fitness and wellness environments has honed her skills in managing staff, developing retention programs, conducting seminars, and coordinating special events. With experience in conducting Functional Abilities Evaluations, Disability Assessments and Post Offer of Employment Testing, Desiree has sharpened her assessment and consulting skills. Desiree is an expert at identifying and correcting movement pattern deficiencies, developing and implementing land and water-based therapeutic exercise prescription and conditioning programs, and conducting office ergonomic assessments and consultations.

Sobia Sheikh, Reg. PT

Ergonomic Consultant & Physiotherapist

Sobia Sheikh is a Registered Physiotherapist in Ontario with over 12 years of experience in Orthopaedic Assessments and Outpatient Care. She has a Masters degree in Physical Therapy from D’Youville College and an Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the University of Toronto. Her expertise in Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) in combination with her experience in the Return to Work sector has honed her skills as an expert Evaluator and Risk Assessor of MSDs in the workplace.

Sobia is a certified WorkWell Evaluator, who has conducted Functional Ability Evaluations, for over 11 years, for clients ranging from WSIB, in-house hospital staff, Hamilton Health Sciences, Toronto Transit Commission, and Brampton Transit. She is an expert in general, job-specific, and medical-legal Functional Ability Evaluations.

Sobia is skilled in the formulation and execution of work hardening programs, job task simulation, as well as on-site job coaching. She provides functional restrictions for Return-to-Work processes, and has extensive experience liaising with Medical Professionals to provide collaborative, detailed and client-focused Return to Work Plans.

Heather Joseph, R.Kin., M.Sc. Ergonomics, CDMP

Ergonomic & Disability Consultant

Heather Joseph has over 20 years of Kinesiology experience in the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness field, and over 15 years of workplace Ergonomics experience.

With extensive experience in both the private and public sector, Heather has worked with Human Resources and Occupational Health & Safety teams, creating and implementing Safety and Ergonomic programs and delivering assessments in work environments ranging from sedentary roles through to heavy industrial settings. In additional to Ergonomic Assessments, Heather has considerable experience conducting Physical and Cognitive Demands Analyses as well as Ergonomic Risk Assessments.

To complement the Ergonomics and Safety aspect of her experience, Heather is a Certified Disability Management Professional and works with Employers to implement innovative Disability Management Programs that focus on absence reduction and early return to work solutions. Believing that employees want to love where they work, Heather is an expert in effecting positive change within workplaces across Canada.

Pam Grills, M.Sc., R.Kin., CCPE

Ottawa Associate Ergonomist

Pam Grills is a Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist with over 20 years experience making industrial and office workplaces healthier and more productive. Pam Grills holds a Masters degree in Ergonomics from the University of Waterloo.

Pam has been involved in the design and redesign of many types of workstations, returning injured workers to safe productive work, and delivering ergonomics training. Recently, Pam made the Supreme Court Judges sit up and take notice of ergonomics by making their courtroom ergonomically correct.

Pam developed and delivered customized safe lifting training for Canada Post Corporation, developed and implemented customized ergonomics programs for NSERC/SSHRC, Nortel, and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and lead Health Canada’s National Ergonomics Advisory Group in developing and internal ergonomics program, office ergonomics education package, ergonomic train-the-trainer, and office ergonomic report guidelines.
